Specially-abled, as the term is used for persons with disabilities, keeping in mind their potential. Shashi Kunj Academy as a regular practice to motivate and promote such children regularly organises events. Today, they invited three girls with special abilities, polio stuck but have proven their potential in the field of sports, making our country, India proud.
Parul Parmar who suffers from Polio, was suggested to be physically active by her doctors. She established a hobby of playing badminton which made her realise her potential, hence she decided to participate in tournaments. Today she proudly boasts of being a World Champion in Para Olympics and owns 26 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze medals. Besides all the achievements, she is addressed as ‘Shuttlecock queen’, even beyond this, she has made her way into Limca book of Records. The disability rather proved a boon to her, now she aims at Arjuna awards. Currently Parul is engaged with Sports Authority as a coach for the specially-abled children.
Bhavina Patel, another living inspiring story, started her journey from Blind peoples Association in Ahmedabad, she got into Table tennis and today is part of a Champions league. She says, “Table Tennis is a mind game, you need complete focus. I devote 6 to 8 hours of my day for the practice of the game, taking care of the mind thus is equally essential, therefore I meditate daily”. She is proud winner of 1 Gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals.
Sonal Patel, too is a Table tennis player and she too is a proudly possesses 1 Gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals. While sharing her story she also narrated her challenges, “being part of Para Olympics and after playing 16 international tournaments at various levels, today it is still difficult for me to get sponsors. I am also struggling to become a trainer or a coach and get a government job, as there is very limited scope to earn a regular income.”
Parul has won a Gold medal in Badminton, Sonal and Bhavina have garnered Silver medal (each) in Table Tennis (womens doubles) at Asian Para Games Indonesia.
After listening to the struggles these girls struck by Polio went through and their parents fully supporting their ambitious journey spending all their savings; media personnel and few of the guests present at the event have taken the responsibility to provide financial and government support wherever possible. Paramjeet Kaur Chhabra, Director at Gujarat Minority and Development Corporation announced her full support in order to push their applications in the respective government departments.
The felicitation event at Shashikunj was supported by Udgam Trust and Asha Desai.
The guests also took an oath to now give a “celebrity status” to such achievers who despite of all challenges, proved their potential and have brought in pride to our nation.
PS: THE PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES (EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES, PROTECTION OF RIGHTS AND FULL PARTICIPATION) ACT, 1995: Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities is Kamlesh Kumar Pandey.
The Persons with Disabilities Act basically enlists facilities that persons with different types of disabilities would be entitled to and the responsibilities and obligations which are placed on the Government of India, State Governments, local bodies and establishments in this behalf. It broadly includes measures for prevention and early detection of disabilities, education, employment, social security, research and manpower development, barrier-free access and preferences and facilities that are available to such persons and the action which needs to be taken to avoid any discrimination against persons with disabilities.
